We welcome the opportunity to review and comment on programs, policies or procedures, initiatives, privacy impact assessments (PIAs), educational material, information sharing agreements, or information systems, even when not required by legislation. If it is a PIA for a common or integrated program or service or for a proposed bill that could have implications for access to information or protection of privacy, ATIPPA, 2015 requires consultation with OIPC.
We will provide an initial response to your request letting you know whether we can assist and whether we require more information from you. If we can assist with your request, our commitment is to provide you with our comments as promptly as possible; this timeframe will depend on the complexity of the consultation, other OIPC priorities, and how responsive you are to follow-up questions and requests for clarification.
Please note that, while OIPC is able to provide information and general guidance, we cannot design, approve, certify, sign-off on, or endorse any program or initiative. Our feedback will be more useful to you if you request our input on initiatives or programs before they are implemented.
How to prepare for a consultation:
- prepare an information package for OIPC that contains details of the initiative you wish to consult about; for example, a draft privacy impact assessment, policy, etc.;
- determine if you want a document review, a meeting, if you want to give a presentation, or do a demonstration, etc.;
- identify any specific questions you have, including specific sections of legislation you wish to discuss; and
- identify what you hope to get out of the consultation (i.e., ideas about best practices, legislative compliance considerations, etc.).
If you wish to request a consultation, please email commissioner@oipc.nl.ca. Your correspondence should include as many details of the initiative as possible.
